RECOMMENDED SIGHTS IN WEGORZEWO *
- LATE-GOTHIC CHURCH of St. Apostles Peter and Paul, built in early 17th century, with a presbytery built at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. The church boasts a baroque altar dating back to 1652 and the oldest organ in the Mazuria region (1647). The pulpit and the confessional also date back to that period.
- WATER TOWER at the Swiecajty lake is a part of the water supply system, together with a pumping station built in 1904-1905. A more modern water treatment plant has been recently built. The 20 m high tower is located on a hill, 22.6 m above the Mamry lake level.
- MEMORIAL to Soviet soldiers who fell in this region during World War II.
- MUSEUM OF FOLK CULTURE established in 1991, whose exhibits have been collected since 1969. Near the Museum, there is the Ethnographic Park at the Wegorapa river, which boasts traditional 18th and 19th century Mazurian building items and material culture exhibits.

- MILITARY CEMETERY dating back to World War I; also a great spot with a view of the Swiecajty lake. It is the resting place of German and Russian soldiers who fell between 1914 and 1918. There is a beautiful view of the Swiecajty lake and the Kocia island.
RECOMMENDED SIGHTS IN THE REGION
- GUJA (PIASKI) SLUICE – a historic building that is the only complete hydrotechnical construction of the Mazurian Channel. Inside the sluice tower, there are hand-operated devices for opening and closing the gates. Near the sluice, there is a rotating roller gate dam.
- MAMERKI – the Headquarters of the German Army High Command (OKH). A group of destroyed bunkers from the World War II period. The main attraction is the “giant” bunker. - RADZIEJE – a classical church designed on an octagon plan, built on field stone underpinning with inscribed date of construction (1827). On the roof, there is an octagon lamp topped with a ball. The interior is decorated with 17th century statues and two 18th century Dutch paintings – “The Capture” and “Christ before Pilate”.
- FIELD HEADQUARTERS – headquarters of Hans Lammers, head of the Reich Chancellery. An S-shaped road crosses the premises. Only one heavy shelter has survived but there are foundation of barracks, as well as parts of the sewer system and drains.
- SZTYNORT – a 17th century classical historic palace of the Lehndorff family, rebuilt in the 19th century. A number of oak trees have survived in the park, with the oldest ones dating back to the year 1600. It is also the location of the largest yacht port in the Mazuria region.
- BANIE MAZURSKIE – a village established in 1566. It is the location of the church of St. Anthony built in the third quarter of the 16th century. In 1698, the church tower was erected. The church was destroyed during World War II and reconstructed between 1975 and 1980.
- BUDRY – an 18th century church of Holy Trinity.
- KOLONIA LESNIEWO – the location of incomplete hydrotechnical constructions of the Mazurian Channel: Lesniewo Dolne sluice (15% completion) and, ca. 900 m behind it, Lesniewo Gorne sluice (30% completion). On the front wall of the sluice body you can see an impressed Nazi badge, a mark of the metal “eagle”. You can also enter the side chamber.
- KUTY – the church of St. Maximilian Kolbe from the second half of the 16th century. Reconstructed in the 1970’s.
- OKOWIZNA – a 19th century brick manor house with the remains of a park. Currently private property.
- OLOWNIK – a 1939 hydroelectric power station. Private property.
- POPIOLY - a mill built at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries.
- POZEZDRZE – a 19th century parish church of St. Stanislaw Kostka, reconstructed after being damaged during war in 1923.
- The “Hochwald” headquarters of Heinrich Himmler. The location of 5 shelters with 2 m thick walls, an underground garage, two brick guardrooms and Himmler’s social shelter that has survived till today.
- RAPA – a Mazurian Pyramid, tomb of the Farenheit family with their mummified remains. The pyramid designed on a square plan and built using field stones and red brick. It has 3 ventilation holes. The inclination angel of external pyramid walls is greater than that of Egyptian pyramids, while the interior angle is identical. Three lines of strong geomagnetic radiation cross in the Rapa.
- SROKOWO – a Bismarck tower built in 1901. The tower was built on one of the hills in area – the Diabla mountain – 157 m above sea level.
- The town hall, built between 1772 and 1775, was a reconstruction of the original building erected in the years 1608-1611. The market near the town hall is the location of a 15th century gothic parish church, a neoclassical presbytery and an 18th century granary.
